Have a look to your right at the building on the opposite corner of Vicolo dei Pellegrini
There is a marble inscription set into the wall, just next to Magna Magna.
It explains in Latin that this was a place for pilgrims, or pellegrini. They would stop at hostels set up in convents.
Thousands of pilgrims passed through Viterbo on the Via Franchigena. They would be on their way to Rome, just as they do today.
