The Vienna Food Walk
Start - Fahnengasse
Welcome to the Vienna food walk. I am Roland and I will try to give you the experience of what locals actually eat in Vienna.
You should be standing near the entrance to Herrengasse station, at the intersections of Fahrengasse and Wallnerstrasse.
Let's get started. I'll talk while you walk.
Turn so the stairs leading down to Herrengasse station are on your right, and start walking straight along Wallnerstrasse.
Right now we are in the heart of the city, the first district. This district is called "Innere Stadt", which translates to inner city and this part is the most touristy part of all of Vienna. So you should actually ask: "How can I have genuine local food in the most touristy places of them all?". Well if you look around, the buildings that you see, they are not flats - most of it is office space. So not a lot of people live here, but a lot of people work here. And people who work here need to eat. Those are the places that we are going to visit. Places where people who work here go for lunch and after-work drinks. I think that this might get you closer to understanding what Viennese people are like because, in the end, you are what you eat.
While you walk, I'll briefly explain how VoiceMap works.
It uses your location to play audio automatically, at the right time and place. This means that you can put your phone away now. Don't worry if I'm silent at times, when I'm not giving directions or telling stories. There's a map on your screen if you ever feel lost, and if you do get way off track without noticing, VoiceMap will let you know.
Keep going along Wallnerstrasse. We're heading to Kohlmarkt. You'll hear from me a little further ahead.
