On your left is a bust of Willem Barentsz.
Barentsz lived from 1550 to 1597, and was a Dutch navigator and Arctic explorer. He is known for the three expeditions he took to the far north in search of a Northeast passage.
On his third expedition, the crew was stranded on the island of Novaya Zemlya for almost a year. Barentsz died on the return voyage in 1597.
The Barents Sea was named after him in the 19th century.
