Allerona: Within the walls of an Umbrian hilltown
Cantinas and Locks
Make your way slowly up the street.
Have a look around as you walk.
Can you notice all the rustic, rickety wood, or sometimes metal doors? Many have ancient-looking locks.
These doors lead down to cantinas. They're underground cellars that were dug in order to use the dirt to mix mortar to build the houses. The oldest homes here are still held together with a mortar mix of dirt and calce, or lime. Many of them have never undergone major structural renovations. Fortunately we don't get strong earthquakes in our region of Italy because if we did, much of Allerona would be reduced to rubble.
