Peabody Mine #10 and Kincaid Power Station

To our right, along the horizon, about 9 miles away, on a clear day can be seen several smoke stacks, not the ones straight ahead, I’m talking about the ones more to our right. Within a few yards of these stacks once existed the entrance to Peabody Number 10 Mine, which operated from 1951 to 1994 and at one point was the largest underground coal mine in the entire world. More than 147 million tons of coal was extracted from the mine and tunnels led from the entrance to a point less than a mile to our right.

The smoke stacks are now part of the Kincaid Power Station, which opened in 1967 and generates enough electricity to power nearly 300,000 homes. While the largest mine in Illinois once existed across the street, all the coal burned by this power station is shipped here from Wyoming, because of its lower sulfur content.
