Mother Jones and Union Miners Cemetery

One the most famous advocates for the rights of miners was Mother Jones. Starting at the age of 60, Mother Jones spent the next 30 years of her life advocating for the lives of miners and organizing strikes around the country. She was once called the most dangerous woman in America. She died in 1930, and is buried at Union Miners Cemetery in Mt. Olive, the only union-owned cemetery in the United States. The cemetery was created in 1899, after the local cemetery refused to allow the burial of four local miners who were killed during a strike at the nearby town of Virden, during what was known as the “Virden Riot.”
