    Milam Landfill

To our left is the largest hill we will encounter on our tour, rising 20 stories into the sky, this is the Milam Landfill, the final resting place for most of the trash collected within 60 miles of here. If during the past couple of days you accidentally threw something into the garbage near here, odds are, this is where you can find it.

Trash has been piling up here since the 1950s, and while yard waste was once its most popular resident, paper now holds that title.

Fortunately, not everything buried beneath this hill stays here forever. When some trash decays, it releases methane gas and those tubes scattered around the hill collect that gas where it is transported to a facility that converts it to natural gas, enough natural gas to heat more than 1000 homes a year!
