• LOCATION 9 | Cowbells, Chalets and Balthus: A Swiss Alpine Village Excursion

    Right towards Hotel de Ville

Turn right now and continue uphill towards the Hotel de Ville, the Town Hall.

Nowadays tourists come to the mountains and are delighted by the scenery, the fresh air and sporting activities. When I first moved here I was surprised to learn that before the 1800s, mountain regions were often avoided as they were considered untamed, dangerous and haunted.

This perception only began to change in the early 1800s through the works of Romantic artists such as Rousseau, Byron and Turner. British tourists, in particular, began to venture into these areas. We have a very good account of Rossiniere from Elizabeth Strutt an early English tourist who visited Rossiniere in 1840. We shall call on some of her observations later in the tour.

    Keep going.
