Philadelphia's Lost Waterfront
PA RR facilities (former) and New Condo Complex
The riverfront ahead of us was formerly owned by railroad companies. Keep walking alongside it.
Pier 12 was operated by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and is now home to the Philadelphia Marine Center. The Pennsylvania Railroad used Piers 13 and 15 as a station for shipping goods on the Delaware. Morgan's Pier, an eatery, is at Pier 15 today.
It is interesting that a modern apartment building is being built right across the street, yet this area was once dirty industrial zone, beset by rats and longshoremen. In fact, the Rat Receiving Station of the Philadelphia Bureau of Health was once located at the foot of Race Street. Citizens could bring rats to the station for a bounty: five cents for live ones; two cents for dead ones!
