Philadelphia's Lost Waterfront
Great Fire of 1850
A spectacular waterfront fire occurred on this block in 1850. It started at a warehouse where this new apartment building stands.
The fire began when pressed hay stored in an upper floor of the warehouse combusted. Explosions of saltpeter followed. At least twenty-eight lives were lost, including several firefighters and some who died after jumping into the river to avoid the inferno.
Keep going. I'll meet you at the bridge.
