Philadelphia's Lost Waterfront
Caves Along the Waterfront
Be careful of the uneven surface of Water Street as you walk toward the Ben Franklin Bridge.
We're walking along a corridor that runs from Spring Garden Street to South Street, about a mile ahead. This was once the Delaware River's western bank, where pioneering Quakers dug caves in which to live. When Quaker families moved out, new families moved in. Early settlers also operated unlicensed taverns and other objectionable businesses in these riverbank caves.
