Ben Franklin Bridge Anchorage
As you pass beneath Ben Franklin Bridge, look up at it. This huge structure holding up the bridge is called an anchorage. Its foundations required twenty-eight thousand cubic yards of concrete, and go down sixty-three feet to bedrock. The engineering report noted that parts of a wooden boat were discovered during the excavation. The boat had sunk into the Delaware right where the anchorage later came to be, which shows how this area was once part of the river.
