Through fashionable Paris in the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn
Place de la Concorde
We're heading for the Hotel Crillon now. Cross the Avenue Gabriel, then cross rue Boissy d'Anglas. Look for the Hotel Crillon with its tall columns on the upper floor.
There is a funny story about the Hotel Crillon during the liberation of Paris. The Allies had put tanks into position on the Place de la Concorde as they worked to round up the Germans who were still in the city. One tank commander overheard someone talking about the "fifth column." Not realizing that this is an expression that means a group within an occupied country who are sympathetic to the occupiers, he fired on the fifth column on the hotel's facade. It was rebuilt, but it still looks a little different from the others. Can you spot the difference?
