Marnie] Coming up on our right-hand side is the prettiest planet of them all! Which one is it Fred?
[Fred] Venus! Named after the Roman goddess of love, bright white in colour it is covered with clouds that reflect and scatter sunlight. Before sunrise, it is known as the ‘morning star’ and the ‘evening star’ when seen at sunset. Venus is sometimes so bright it is mistaken for a UFO!
Venus is the second planet from the Sun, our closest planetary neighbour and roughly the same size. A rocky planet with volcanoes and deformed mountains, its structure is similar to earth with an iron core. Venus spins slowly in the opposite direction from most planets.
It takes sunlight 6 minutes to travel from the Sun to Venus. But sunlight doesn't penetrate its thick atmosphere. Heat is trapped in a greenhouse effect, making it the hottest planet in our solar system. Hot enough to melt this car instantly.
