original university building
Stop here. In our second loop around the block we’ll learn about the architectural history of the buildings that populate this block.
Turn to look up at the building facing the park. At the start of our tour we learned that it imitated the university buildings of England. To be more specific, it was in the Gothic Revival style, resembling an ornate medieval castle. Octagonal turrets rose from all four corners, originally designed to allow archers to rain down arrows, but in this style used only as a decorative embellishment. A massive three-story window topped with a pointed arch allowed lots of natural light to enter the chapel behind.
Let's move on. Keep walking toward the end of the block, keeping the park on your left.
