Greek revival rowhouses
As you approach the corner stop and look diagonally to your left at the houses facing the park.
This uniform row of houses was built in the 1830s as a refuge for prominent families who wanted to trade the congestion and disease of downtown Manhattan for a more peaceful and rural existence.
Notice how similar the houses are to each other. Much of the appeal of this block lies in the uniformity of the buildings. These rowhouses were built in the Greek Revival Style, bringing to ordinary homes the Doric columns usually found in churches and courthouses.
Let’s continue. Walk to the corner and take a right.
