Stop here and turn your attention to your right.
This tan brick neo-Renaissance style building was completed in 1901. This style of construction was known for its fireproof rooms, resulting in lower fire insurance rates and attracting many garment makers.
Although the steel and iron bones of the structure were protected with terra-cotta fireproofing, the interior was finished with wood and the rooms were packed with flammable materials. When the inevitable fire struck, more than a hundred workers were dead. Public outrage over this tragedy sparked a wave of reforms.
Some of these changes included building and safety regulations like mandatory fire drills, periodic fire inspections, fire hoses, sprinklers, exit signs, fire alarms and occupancy limits.
