Off to your right on the beach are some cement ruins of the Gross and San Carlos Canning companies.

And just ahead is a bronze memorial depicting a diver’s helmet is a memorial where we will stop for a moment.

    [4 SECOND PAUSE]

This memorial was dedicated in 2008 to the cannery divers of Monterey. These courageous divers were responsible for installing, repairing, replacing and maintaining the underwater pipes that connected the floating fish hoppers to the holding tanks and ultimately the canneries. We saw the ruins of one of these holding tanks near the InterContinental Hotel and Bubba Gump Restaurant earlier on this walking tour.

The monument lists the names of these divers. The two with asterisks by their names lost their lives while they performed their job under the waves of Monterey Bay.

    [3 SECOND PAUSE]

We're going to keep moving now. But if you need a restroom break, the small gray building just ahead is the last public restroom along this walking tour. After the restroom, follow the sidewalk to your right, as it continues along the shoreline.

Preview mode limited to first 3 locations.
