LOCATION 13 | Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fairy Tale Houses Walking Tour
Stop and have a look to your left for a light stucco color two story house with a gray wood garage door and polygonal hipped roof. It has a sign hanging from an oak limb saying Fables 1928.
(3 seconds silence)
Mr. Swain asked Hugh Comstock if he would be able to design and build a French Norman style home. Comstock, who had no previous architectural training, said sure, why not. Fables characteristic polygonal hipped roof over the ell jutting out from the front elevation was Comstock's response to Swain's request. When these five homes were built back in the 1920s, they all had a lovely ocean view. Today you may still be able to catch a glimpse of the ocean between the trees.
With the addition of this quaint cottage, Comstock clearly showed his talent and diversity, and is now known in Carmel as the "builder of dreams."
The next house I want to show you is next door. So when you're ready continue toward the corner.
