LOCATION 14 | Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fairy Tale Houses Walking Tour
Have a look to your left for a two story light gray house, with an oriel window and an intricately designed half-timbering pattern on the exterior siding. A Carmel stone stairway leads down to the cottage.
This is Birthday House. It was built in 1928 for $2800.
Birthday House was the fifth home Comstock designed for Mr. Swain. Here he used a New England saltbox style design. Saltbox homes are two stories in the front and one story at the back with a steeply pitched roofline that follows the same pattern. We will walk by the final home Comstock built for Mr. Swain later in this tour.
When you're ready, turn right at the corner ahead, then keep walking up Sixth Avenue.
