Fairy Tale Houses of Carmel-by-the-Sea
Carmel Plaza and The Getaway
Hello and welcome to this tour of Fairy Tale Houses in Carmel-by-the-sea. I'm Lynn, I have been visiting Carmel regularly since 1964 and lived there full time for seven years. With our home being in the Historic Hill District, I found myself giving impromptu tours of the Fairy Tale Houses on a daily basis. This led me to writing a blog, Adventures of a Home Town Tourist, and developing numerous walking tours of the area. Today I want to take you on one of our most popular tours, Comstock's Fairy Tale Houses.
You should be standing on the corner, in front of the boutique inn called The Getaway. It's the large white building with the long balconies.
You should be able to see The Getaway's plain blue sign near the corner. The Getaway used to be the site of Carmel’s first hotel, Hotel Carmel which was built in the late 1800s. Hotel Carmel was purchased by Frank Devendorf and Frank Powers of the Carmel Development Company and moved down Ocean Avenue to Monte Verde in 1903.
Let's get going. We'll begin by walking up the hill on Ocean Avenue.
So, with The Getaway on your left, make your way up the sidewalk on the left of Ocean Avenue and keep going.
While you walk, I'll briefly explain how VoiceMap works.
It uses your location to play audio automatically, at the right time and place. This means that you can put your phone away now. Don't worry if I'm silent at times, when I'm not giving directions or telling stories. There's a map on your screen if you ever feel lost, and if you do get way off track without noticing, VoiceMap will let you know.
Continue straight. You'll hear from me further ahead.
