• LOCATION 7 | The Mysteries of Milan: From the Duomo to the Royal Palace

    Looking back at Duomo

So just stop here for a minute and look back towards the Duomo.

Ever since the Madonna was put on top of the upper most spire in 1774 she’s always dominated and protected the city from her vantage point of 108 metres (that’s about 350 feet) and no other building could be higher. So you may well ask, well what about the skyscrapers on the horizon. Well, guess what, every highrise building that dares to rise above the Duomo’s Madonnina has to have a small replica of the same statue. The Archbishop blesses her and she’s ceremoniously placed on top of the new building. So she’s always at the highest point in the city.

Now turn around and head over to the busy road. Look for the pedestrian crossing just to the left.
