LOCATION 1 | The Best of Milan: Explore the City’s Secrets
Hello everybody, I am Micol and I live in Milan. I studied history of art and love wandering in the city to get lost and to always discover new corners and secrets. Today I’m going to share with you a lot of interesting stories about Milan highlights, history and culture.
You should be standing in Piazza Scala, opposite the Teatro alla Scala, the building with the arched portico.
In the center of the piazza is a statue of Leonardo da Vinci, dedicated to the genius and to his pupils.
Direct your attention to the Teatro alla Scala.
The Theatre was opened in 1778 and still today is one of the main stages for performers of the world, dedicated to Opera, ballet and classical concerts. In the past it was also a sort of social club for aristocratic and noble families who occupied the boxes and meet friends, play cards and gamble.
The exterior is a typical neoclassical style building, simple and sober. But I suggest a visit to the Museo teatrale alla Scala just in front of you to get inside, and you can really understand why it is considered one of the most elegant theatres in the world!
If you do plan on visiting, you can pause the tour now. When you're ready, come back to this spot and press play.
So, let's get going.
With your back to the theatre, make your way to the far right corner of the piazza, towards the entrance of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele.
While you walk, I'll briefly explain how VoiceMap works.
It uses your location to play audio automatically at the right moment. This means you can put your phone away. There might be occasional periods of silence in between my talking, this is normal. There's an onscreen map if you feel lost and if you go way off track, VoiceMap will let you know.
The building just to the left of the Galleria entrance is Palazzo Marino, built in 1557 as a private residence and then transformed as the city hall.
Keep going towards the Galleria. I'll meet you there.
