Theatreland Tour with Ian McKellen
The bronze fellow just ahead is a statue of Michael Faraday, a great pioneer in the field of electricity. In a minute we’ll see the first theatre ever to use electric lights anywhere in the world.
Carry on along Savoy Place, keep Mr Faraday on your right.
The building behind Faraday’s statue was the original headquarters of the British Broadcasting Corporation. That’s the BBC. When I was a boy I used to listen to Saturday night theatre on the radio. Radio isn’t like tv or cinema, it has the immediacy of theatre for me, and it’s wonderful way to use your imagination as the audience.
