Theatreland Tour with Ian McKellen
Woah woah woah, stop by the black gates on your right hand side.
Look through them.
A church - St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden. And guess who designed it?
It was commissioned by the Earl of Bedford in 1630. He wanted a simple design, and he ordered Jones to build something “not much better than a barn.” Jones told him he’d have the “handsomest barn in all of England”.
It’s important for actors, this church. Indeed, it’s called the Actors Church.
Continue up Bedford Street and I’ll tell you why.
Inside the church there are memorials to a great many actors - Ellen Terry, who was Henry Irving’Charlie Chaplin, Boris Karloff, Noel Coward, who lived at the Savoy.
