Cross to Ironmonger Lane
Turn down the narrow grey brick lane to your right here. Continue along it.
This street is called Ironmonger Lane. The name arises from the early Middle Ages when Ironmongers used to work here. However according to the historian John Stow they had all moved away by the 16th Century. Ironmonger Lane's chief fame today is that the Mercer's Livery Hall occupies a site further down. The Mercers are the premier Livery Company in the City and they take precedence over all other 110 companies.
