LOCATION 1 | The Soul of Alfama
Santa Luzia - Viewpoint 1
Hi there! Welcome. I’m Pats and I’ll be guiding you today on The Soul of Alfama Tour.
You should be standing at the entrance to the viewpoint of Santa Luzia, on the lower terrace, facing the river with the tram line 28 and the tram stop to your left behind you.
On the right hand side is a tile panel with a panorama of Lisbon. On the left a small fountain with a fish statue and an armillary sphere pattern tile panel.
Can you see the balcony with tiles and a pergola ahead of you?
Make your way over to it.
[3 SECOND PAUSE]
Stop there and find a place to sit contemplating the view, while I tell you about what you’re seeing and the Alfama district.
[3 SECOND PAUSE]
Can you spot the church on the hill to your left?
That's São Miguel Church. We'll be walking past it later on the tour.
Further left you'll spot the dome of the National Pantheon, also known as Saint Engrácia Church.
Now have a look towards the river.
If you look down, you can spot the tile roofs and the white houses of the Alfama quarter.
If there’s a district in Lisbon that has a soul - and an “old soul” – it’s Alfama.
Alfama is proud, loud, lively and authentic, especially when it preps up and gets all “dressed up” for the Lisbon Popular Saints festivities in June.
If you’re visiting Lisbon in June, try not to miss the city’s festivities, particularly on the eve of Santo António, Saint Anthony’s Day, June 12th. You’ll understand what I am saying.
“Alfama é linda” - “Alfama is beautiful”, like the locals cry.
Perhaps at the end of this tour you’ll also say “Alfama é linda”.
Alfama is definitely one-of-a-kind in the Lisbon, or even in the European cities panorama.
Before we head off, let me briefly explain how VoiceMap works.
It uses your location to play audio automatically, at the right time and place. This means that you can put your phone away now. Don't worry if I'm silent for a while, when I'm not giving directions or telling stories. There's a map on your screen if you ever feel lost, and if you do get way off track without noticing, VoiceMap will let you know.
So, lets get going.
When you're ready, head to the upper terrace, walking past the tile fountain and the esplanade/restaurant called "Miradouro de Santa Luzia" in between the two terraces to access it.
Go up the three flights of steps, on the left of the fountain. I'll meet you by the upper terrace.
