Rua de Belém - The Bakery of the famous Custards Tarts
Stop here for a moment by the road.
Have a look to the opposite side.
Can you spot the bakery with the dark blue sun blinds? It’s the original bakery of the famous Pastéis de Belém, the one and only custards tarts.
Its well worth a visit. If you want, you can pause the tour and go over to it. When you're done, come back to this side of the road and turn right to resume the tour and continue.
If you prefer rather to keep moving now, turn left to continue walking.
If the bakery is too busy, which is often the case, order some from the counter. I suggest you eat them outdoors, in the Belém garden.
Whatever you decide, it’s worth it to enter and take a look. The white and blue glazed tile panels on the walls are a must see.
The bakery has been making the custard tarts since 1837, after an ancient ‘secret recipe' from the Jerónimos Monastery.
I recommend having at least one, or more! Don’t forget to sprinkle the top with a pinch of cinnamon.
Keep going straight.
