Map and Ema on Kyoto audio tour Fushimi Inari Shrine: An In-Depth Guide

Please stop and look at the map.

Being the headquarters of Inari shrine, this shrine is as big as one whole mountain. You are pretty much at the very bottom. To the top, It takes about 2.5 to 3 hours for a round trip. I'd recommend you keep going a little bit more and not all the way to the top unless you have a lot of energy.

Also If you look around, you can find a lot of small picture tablets that look like fox faces or Torii gates. They are called Ema Picture Tablets. In other temples or shrines, they might have a picture of a horse, or other animals of zodiac signs. But here in Inari shrine, you see the picture of a fox.
People write their names, addresses, and their wishes on one, then hang it in the shrine so God can take a look at it. Like Torii gates, they are not just pretty. Each one of them is somebody's life.

Now, facing the map, turn right and make your way towards the back of the shrine that's behind you.
