Hidden Gem on Kyoto audio tour Fushimi Inari Shrine: An In-Depth Guide

Do you see the long stairs ahead of you and a small stone shrine on your right, with similar looking shrines in the background?

Please don't go up the stairs but instead walk through the stone Torii Gate of the shrine on your right, then go up the small set of steps on your left.
    Please watch your step.

Now these are the hidden gems of this shrine.
You see a lot of stone monuments with different names of gods carved on them in each altar.

Please keep going up the steps on your right.

These monuments are called Tsuka, private gods of worshipers.
The main God in this shrine is believed to be truly versatile. It even turns into a god you made up. Worshipers wished for different things, came up with their own gods, carved the names, and enshrined them.
Tsuka is everywhere in this mountain, there are over 10000 of them.
Each worshiper has his or her place in this vast mountain, Inari shrine is truly convenient and it's a place for people.

You could make up a God with your name, too.
Some people might take this as arrogance having your name by God, but this also shows the tolerant nature of Shintoism.

After the steps, please turn left and go straight. You'll see a pond on your right. I'll end this tour there.

Preview mode limited to first 3 locations.
