LOCATION 92 | The Modoc War: A Homeland Lost
On Great Northern Rd/CR 111
You should now be on Great Northern Road, also known as County Road 111, keeping Lost River, and Mount Shasta if you can see it, on your right.
Even the fabric of Modoc life was affected by war - and life did continue in the Stronghold. One parent always remained awake, on watch both night and day, and parents would take turns after the birth of a child. My great-grandmother actually gave birth to my grandfather during the Modoc War - with none of the traditional hot stones and fur covering as she moved into labor. I have often thought it's a miracle that I even exist. Imagine what she must have been thinking giving birth in the middle of war, not even knowing if they would live. What about a future for her son? Did he even have one?
