A Walk through Keene's History
Stop here for a moment outside of The Corner News shop.
This is the site of Keene's original railroad station.
The Cheshire Railroad opened to Keene in 1848. The track crossed Main Street and connected with Fitchburg and Boston. The railroad was very important in the development of Keene. The railroad allowed people and goods to travel into and out of Keene more easily.
If you look between The Corner News shop and the yellow building next door, you will see the Cheshire Rail Trail. This is where the railroad tracks were. The rail trail is now a bike path for Keene residents to enjoy.
When you're ready, continue along Main Street in the same direction you've been going.
