A Walk through Keene's History
Once across Washington, have a look at the red brick house on your right, 82 Washington Street. This is the old Jailer's House.
Once you've had a good look, turn left and continue walking down Washington Street in the same direction you've been going.
This building was the home of the person in charge of the stone prison. The prison stood at the corner of Washington and Mechanic Streets from 1833 - 1884. Washington Street used to be called Prison Street because this is where the jail was.
Continue walking down Washington. We'll meet you when you get to Vernon Street.
