A Walk through Keene's History
Here we are at the Washington Street Burying Ground, on your left.
Feel free to stop and have a look around the graves. Or if you prefer, continue walking along Washington Street while we tell you more.
This cemetery has the graves of many important early settlers. Catherine Fiske, a pioneer teacher of women from 1810 - 1830 is buried here. Nathan Blake is also buried here. He was one of the first settlers of Keene. You'll hear more about him when we get further down Main Street. Some gravestones from the town's first cemetery on lower Main Street were moved to this cemetery in 1904.
If you're still at the cemetery, just continue along Washington in the same direction you've been going.
