A Walk through Keene's History
Along Winter Street
Continue walking along Winter Street, keeping to the left side of the street.
Because this is Winter Street, we'll tell you about the Great Keene Blizzard of 1888.
The blizzard happened from March 11th through 14th. Snow fell for three days straight. The wind blew the snow into huge banks that were 12 to 15 feet tall. All the streets in Keene were blocked. This meant that trains stopped running and stage coaches couldn't be used. The mail wasn't delivered for five days. To leave their houses, people dug snow tunnels from their front doors. Keene hasn't seen a blizzard that terrible since.
Keep going straight.
