Welcome to Edinburgh! Join me for an exploration of both sides of this 'city of contrasts', combining the dark, narrow alleyways along the Royal Mile in the Old Town with the wide Georgian-era terraces of the New Town. Featuring iconic views of the city, this introductory tour will help you explore this fascinating and historic city.
Edinburgh Castle, Grassmarket, Old Town, Royal Mile, New Town, George Street, Calton Hill
Make your way to the bottom of Granny's Green Steps, in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, at the west end of the popular Grassmarket area in Edinburgh's Old Town.
Places to stop along the way:
Grab a coffee in the Grassmarket where we begin our route; there are toilets and a cafe in the National Galleries of Scotland (just over half-way round); during the summer there's an open-air cafe on Calton Hill near the tour end point.
Best time to walk:
Walking the route in the morning will help you avoid the crowds (especially during the summer).
Calton Hill can be treacherous underfoot, so best avoided in the evening/night. Take care when crossing roads, and the Old Town cobbles can be slippery and uneven underfoot.
