She paved the way for many other female astronomers by lecturing on the subject of women in astronomy, as well as by recruiting many other women to join the observatory as human computers. Their group was known as 'Pickering's harem' - a derogatory name which does pick up on the fact that they were always considered assistants to the university-educated male astronomers. Despite the fact that it was exacting and technical work, the female computers were not even paid as well as the local factory girls.
