Slessor went to postings like Okoyong where male missionaries had barely escaped with their lives. This was often unpleasant and unsanitary – one time she slept on lice-filled sacks until she had built her own house. The only people with her were her adopted children.
Nigeria was dangerous in the late 1800s, not just for missionaries but for the local people. The historic slave trade had had a destructive impact on the surrounding tribes. Life was valued cheaply, human sacrifice was commonplace and there were a whole host of superstitions to make sense of the fragility of existence.
