To get to South Georgia they had to go through the Drake Passage, a bottleneck between the southern tip of South America and the northmost point of Antarctica. Waves there regularly reach 18 metres; the James Caird was only 6.9m long. Shackleton said they were the worst waves he had ever seen in his 26 years at sea.
