McGonagall's performances would often erupt into violence. One time he was reciting at a local circus when people started throwing things, including a bag of soot, tins, rotten eggs and old boots. He only stopped performing when he was hit by a brick in the stomach and knocked out.
People loved to play pranks on McGonagall. He received a letter claiming to be from the King of Burma, declaring him Sir William Topaz McGonagall, knight of the White Elephant of Burma. He used that title to the end of his days.
