    Union House Flagpole I

Stop here and look up – this flagpole is 123-metres high and the flag itself measures 40 metres on one side and 20 metres on the other. (But it’s still only the second largest flag in the country.)

Let me tell you a story about how the flag was designed. In 1971, a few months before the union was formally established, an advertisement in the local newspaper Al Ittihad asked readers to send in their ideas for the new country’s flag.

1,300 people responded, but the winner was the then 19-year-old Abdullah Mohammad Al Ma’enah. When the winning design was published in Al Ittihad, it was printed in black and white, so Mr. Al Ma’enah had no idea that his was the winning design until he saw it raised up a flagpole with his own eyes.
