    Regal Fabrics Shop I

Stop here for a minute, in front of Regal Fabrics. This store is one of 16 that Regal has across the region.

The textile trade is one of the largest industries in the country – and one of the oldest. It started in Deira’s Grand Souk, and in the 1980s it spilled over into Hamriya – a neighbourhood near the Creek that is now called the “textile district”. Over time, textiles helped to make Dubai one of the Arabian Gulf’s most important trading ports.

You’ll still find plenty of textile traders here today, and many of them can trace the arrival of their family back to a great grandparent from India, Iran and other parts of the Gulf in the 1920s.
