U-Boat Storyboard and World War II
You're now approaching a picture board on your right. Stop once you reach it.
The board displays a photo of approximately 30 World War II German submarines, known as U- Boats, in May 1945, after they came into the city to surrender to the Royal Navy.
At the end of the war, all active German submarines in the North Atlantic were required to come into the nearest Allied base to surrender. For many of them this was this city, which had the naval port name of HMS Ferret.
This picture was taken a few miles down stream from here, at the Lisahally Docks which are now the main deep water docks for the city. At least one was brought up and moored beside the Guildhall for the city's residents to look at more closely. After they were stripped of anything else, they were all taken out into the deepwater of the Atlantic and scuttled. Unfortunately none are able to be salvaged, as they would have made an interesting exhibit in the city's Maritime Museum, which is currently being developed at the time of this recording.
Once you've had a good look, keep walking.
