    Emigration Sculptures 2

Emigration Sculptures 2 on Derry / Londonderry audio tour Derrie Danders: A Guide to the Quayside and North City

If you look at the sculptures you will see that they represent a family of four leaving for the New World - the father and daughter looking forward but the mother and son looking back at Ireland and her elderly parents, which they may never see again. I find it very moving. This sculpture represents all aspects of emigration from the city, whether it is the initial period of the 1700s when the emigrants were primarily the Ulster Scots or the 1840s and later when the emigrants were primarily the native Irish Catholics after the potato famine.

Now, have a look at the 6 stone benches arranged in a semi-circle, which feature the names of 6 ships from the city. Make your way over to the first one on the left.
