Tour Locations | Haunted Chester: A Spooky Stroll around the Roman-Walled City
Sick To Death
Stop here a moment and look back across the road.
You will see St Michael's Church — it's up on The Rows above an Italian restaurant. This is now home to Sick To Death, a small visitor attraction devoted to the history of medicine. The most famous exhibit is a costume worn by Chester's Plague Doctor. Plague ravaged the city in the early years of the 17th century and over 2,500 died. The Plague Doctor wore a distinctive mask with a long beak-style nose. This was filled with protective herbs to help the doctor avoid the transmission of the disease. Given events around the Covid-19 pandemic, this independent attraction reveals the irony of how the history of Chester repeats itself over the centuries.
Now, turn back around, and walk down the road, towards the river, staying on the left-hand side of the road.
