Spier Art Walk: Wine Tasting Room
Start - Wine Tasting Room
Welcome to the Spier Art Walk.
I'm Mariota Enthoven, a member of the family that bought Spier in 1993. I've been living with my husband, Angus McIntosh, and three children here since 2007.
The Spier farm is home to one of the largest collections of contemporary South African art in the country. Since 1996, Spier has been active in a number of programmes that have greatly impacted on the visual arts in South Africa. The Spier Art Collection is largely defined by the work of young emerging and internationally admired artists.
On the walk, you'll visit nine artworks located around the estate. These include an architectural scale artwork, a figurative sculpture, a collection of mosaic artworks and an interactive audio installation. Each artwork has an information board, where you can read more about the artwork and the artist.
Let's get going.
With the entrance to the Tasting Room on your left, make your way onto the red path ahead, then turn right and continue walking.
This path is called the Spine, and you'll be following it for most of the walk.
While you walk, let me briefly explain how VoiceMap works.
It uses your location to play audio automatically, at the right time and place. This means that you can put your phone away now. Don't worry if I'm silent for a while, when I'm not giving directions or telling stories. There's a map on your screen if you ever feel lost, and if you do get way off track without noticing, VoiceMap will let you know.
