Cape Town on Foot: Castle to Slave Lodge
Turn right into Parliament Lane
Turn right into Parliament Lane. The parliamentary grounds are behind the fence on your left. As you walk along the lane look out for the marble statue of Queen Victoria, which was unveiled in 1890.
The Slave Lodge is the biggest building built by slave labour in Cape Town. Fire gutted the first Lodge in 1679. Overcrowding became an acute problem in the new Lodge because it was built like a fortress with slit-like openings for windows to prevent slaves from escaping.
I'll tell you more when we get to the front entrance. Keep walking to the end of this lane.
