La Macarena to Parque Nacional
Coming up on your right is the San Martín shopping mall.
Feel free to stop there for a Colombian cup of coffee or a refreshment. You can resume the tour when you're done. Otherwise continue walking straight.
While you walk, let me tell you a little about the birdlife of Colombia.
The city is built over an extended plain called la sabana de Bogotá. The area had many wetlands, but most of them have been dried up to make way for construction. Some of the larger wetlands have been preserved as public spaces. Many migratory birds come to these wetlands during winter, and this makes them very popular with birdwatchers from around the world.
Colombia leads the world in avian biodiversity. Its home to 1889 species, or 20% of all bird species on Earth. 197 species of migratory birds are also temporary residents.
So if you want to see birds, this country is the place to be. We will be ending the tour in the Parque Nacional, where many of these birds make their nests right in the heart of the city.
Keep going. You'll hear from me again in a few minutes.
