About the Tour

There are many facets to Berlin. It's a young city, it's a trendy city, it's a green one, a vibrant one, full of art and architecture, but most and foremost, it shaped 20th century history like nothing else. This is what Jo Eckardt will show you: the signs of history as it has taken place in the very sites you'll walk through. You will follow the route of the Berlin Wall, stepping over it: into the East; into the West. You'll hear stories that immerse you in Berlin as it was in its darkest hour. You will see where the Nazis had their center of power, and explore what remains of their architecture. You will remember the victims of their terror regime, and you will see how present day Germany has reinvented itself.

Jo Eckardt

My name is Jo Eckardt. I studied literature, history, and social work - in Cologne and in New York. Since 2001 I have been living in Berlin. It's my favorite city! In 2004 I started my own touring company called A Friend in Berlin. It's so much fun showing tourists the city, because they usually don't know what to expect, and they are always impressed! When I don't tour the city, I write books (sorry, they are mostly in German).

Major Landmarks

  • Potsdamer Platz

  • Topography of Terror

  • Checkpoint Charlie

  • Gendarmenmarkt

  • Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

  • Brandenburg Gate

  • Reichstag Building

Directions to Starting Point

Sony Center is hard to miss with its tent-shaped, glass roof, in the center of Potsdam Square. Subways, S-Bahn, busses - all go to Potsdam Square. Once you're in Sony Center, look around, marvel at the architecture, look for the remains of the hotel Esplanade (the Emperor's breakfast room, you can look in from the outside), and then head for the exit towards Potsdamer Strasse, that's where the tour begins.

Comments

I liked this tour, as it provides a basic sketch of places of significance around Berlin. The tour followed a nice path, and I appreciated walking along the path of The Wall. You will miss out in terms of a regular walking tour, however. Most frustrating part, “There’s not much to see along this part of the walk, so I’ll share with you some of Berlin’s history. . . “ then, no history!!!

There is very little beyond a walking route and a description of places along the route. I would have appreciated more historical insights and even a personal anecdote or quotes from people in history. Anything to make this walk more. But better than nothing and there narrator has a pleasant voice :-)
