    King's Circus

King's Circus on Bath audio tour Walk the Highlights of Georgian & Victorian Bath

Let’s stop here a while. All around you and built in 3 segments, are buildings designed by the Bath architect John Wood the Elder and was completed by the late 1760’s.

With your back to the massive trees in the centre, planted in the early 1800s, look at any one of the individual 33 houses, which make up the Circus and cast your eyes at the magnificent carvings and architecture. Can you see how 3 types of classical columns have been used here: the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian – notice also the 525 carved reliefs, just above the door level, in what is known as an entablature. Even today, some of these carvings are not fully understood.

Let’s continue walking, keeping the trees to your left, until you reach the junction of Brock Street on your right.

Preview mode limited to first 3 locations.
